The Brandon
Builds poster depicts Brandon
as a small jig-saw puzzle
with its key center piece being "SEGMENT
SIX".
And from that same
page we have
"Brandon, Vermont is more than
250 years old.
Let’s face it, at that age, everyone needs a little facelift!"
Well, we have from the jig-saw
puzzle AUTHENTIC
and the Brandon Area Chamber of Commerce slogan is
"Unhurried, Unspoiled, Unforgettable"
A facelift is far from authentic
and unspoiled.
A historical town like Brandon Vermont will no longer be historical.
The cosmetic surgery of a "facelift" will hide the wisdom of old
and destroy key historical aspects
of the town.
Businesses, shops and professionals
are already decentralized and out of town,
for example Park Village and Blue Seal.
Many shops come in and then close
in short time.
Industry certainly is not a strong attribute of Brandon.
Walk around town and there is gloom
among residents.
The looming segment 6
project.
Casella Construction has been
contracted for the Segment 6 Route 7 project.
There's hypocrisy in that OMYA
contracts Casella.
From Vermonters for a Clean Environment,
Inc.
"These are questions
that the people of western Vermont have a right to ask.
When a company operates on the scale of Omya in a small state with
sensitive natural resources,
we must consider the future benefits of Omya's plans. Vermont is
the Switzerland of the United States,
and this sort of mining and transportation operation would not be
well-received in Omya's home country.
Pride in the natural landscape is a cornerstone of Switzerland's
image,
and restrictions on diesel emissions help to keep Switzerland's
air clean.
It is appropriate to ask the question: will Vermont's needs and
Omya's needs be compatible in the future?"
Another Casella business, one of
the area's eminent garbage haulers,
also a major user of route 7 through Brandon.
Casella's trucking route through
Brandon, and it is this trucking that literally shakes
and breaks the foundations of homes
along this route.
Besides this, the noise and diesel fumes!
Right of ways to home owners for
the project were forced through threats of condemnation.
But as far as known no compensation
for the cracked foundations
or issues related to noise and diesel fumes.
Although Brandon Area Chamber
of Commerce enthusiastically supports the segment six
project,
it is not evident that the many
homeowners and residents along the construction route do.
Business owners also have many
concerns despite having to maintain optimism.
Maria Ammatuna who owns Creative
Fiber Designs says
"I
hope a little bit of dust and destruction won't deter them."
